Sunny Days

For the past two years my mother in-law has given us seeds from her sunflowers. They were put in the garage and forgotten about. Late May we finally planted them in the bed in front of our back deck. The soil from last season was still able to be used. Jason simply dumped the bag into the bed and raked them in for about 5 minutes... and the waiting began!

We saw the flowers sprout up and begin to grow. As the stalks began to lengthen we started to see some buds. So EXCITING!

'

They were really getting big! It looked gorgeous in our backyard.

Sadly the season ended and the flowers died off.

Luckily my mother in-law explained the process of saving the seeds so we can have these beautiful flowers every year!

Instructions for saving sunflower seeds (or other flower types)

  1. Wait for the flowers to all die off.
  2. Cut the the stems just below the flower.
  3. Lay the flowers out on a flat surface in the sun
  4. Leave them for an few hours in the sun.
  5. Take them and place into a brown bag of some sort. [Brown lunch bag or paper grocery bag
  6. Roll or staple the bag closed.
  7. Place the bag in a dry place for the winter.

Enjoy sunflowers for years to come! Just repeat the process!

The future is bright.
